Now showing on the Horizon Hobby site, is the Spektrum AR7100R Rev Limit RPM sensor and bracket assembly available separately. Currently not in stock (which is Horizon’s way of saying “not yet available”), the site shows availability by mid-September 2008.
Priced at $24.99 USD, this sensor bolts on the rear of the engine’s crankcase and senses the RPM of the engine’s crankshaft, generating a pulse that the receiver’s rev limiter circuitry reads. Sold originally with Spektrum’s newly released AR7100R receiver, the sensor is compatible with other aftermarket governors, such as the Aerospire MultiGov.
The benefit of this sensor is that since it reads the crankshaft positon through the engine’s backplate, it doesn’t rely on magnets that can sometimes be prone to fall out in flight. Also, it’s a much easier sensor to install and adjust on most helicopters. Per Horizon Hobby’s customer service department, this sensor will be available for purchase in the next few weeks. It would be safe to assume that the sensor will be available shortly thereafter from most retailers that stock Spektrum receivers and equipment.
