Since the release of the Align Trex 700N kit there have been wide spread complaints about stripped gears. Two main theories have been discussed as the cause of this issue; 1. play in plastic clutch bearing block, and 2. the MOD 0.7 gears are too weak. Align did shortly after the kit release come out with a revised -1 main gear that was slightly larger in diameter to decrease the gear lash. Even still many people have experiencing stripping with the updated Align gear.
Align choose to use the same MOD 0.7 gears from the Trex 600E/N kits. However when you look at every other 90 size heli on the market, they use larger MOD 1.0 gears. MicroHeli listened the user’s requests for larger gears and delivered just that. Released a couple weeks ago, MicroHeli designed a conversion that keeps the same 8.2 gear ratio as the stock MOD 0.7 gears.

It’s clear in the pictures the huge difference in the size and pitch of the MOD 1.0 gears. As an added bonus the MicroHeli gear is CNC machined while the stock Align gear is molded. This should result in a gear that runs very true.
So how does the gear conversion stack up weight wise compared to stock. The answer it’s heavier, by the tune of .6oz. This is not because of the MOD 1.0 pitch on the teeth, but instead due to the design of the main gear which has considerably more “meat” as seen in the pictures. The pinions are very close in weight naturally since the design is identical.
Align MOD 0.7 Weight:
- 164T Main Gear = 37.2g
- 20T Pinion Gear = 21.2g
- Total = 58.4g (2oz)
MicroHeli MOD 1.0 Weight:
- 115T Main Gear =52.5g
- 14T Pinion Gear =20.4g
- Total = 72.9g (2.6oz)
Will this solve the Trex 700N gear stripping issue, only time will tell once more of these gear conversions get the hands of pilots everywhere.
