I recently purchased a KDS 450qs from thinkrc.com, and I think some people may benefit from my experience flying the craft. Everyone says 6ch ccpm helis are not for beginners, but really, a pro isnt looking for a 6ch in the 200$ range. So, like most buyers, I am a novice when it comes to helis, although I have a ton of flight sim experience. Let me just say, it does not translate over.
I bought spare rotor rotor and tail blades with the machine, and a spare battery. Good thing I got the battery, because the one that came in the kit was not functional. It would fly, but will not recharge, the third cell is bad.
As I expected, I crashed it a few times the first day, no fault of the craft, just my inexperience. In my first crash, I damaged the left pitch servo and broke loose the bushing that holds the tail rotor pitch control to the blades. This I will say is a poor design, because it is held together only by friction. I could reinsert it, but it would not hold when changing tail rotor pitch. I solved the problem with a drop of superglue on the brass bushing. This could be solved by KDS simply by using a longer bushing and an eclip to hold it on.
After a second crash, I further trashed the pitch servos, which are the main short coming of this kit. They are all plastic gears, and simply will not hold up against a crash. I went to my local hobby shop and purchased 3 Hitec metal gear servos, and have had no problems. They were not a perfect fit, and were very difficult to install, though I am very experienced in rc, the helicopter is hard to work on. This would be a real problem for a true novice, and it set me back 96$.
The fiberglass blades hold up well, and was still flying very well with alot of blade tip damage, as well as some cracks in the airfoil surface. The tail rotor blades are even more resilient, and show no damage at all.
So, all in all, I am happy with the kit. It has some short comings, but I could have easily spent 350$ on a similar kit and still ended up with plastic gears. The transmitter is fantastic, and impressed some of my friends who commonly race rc cars. It has alot of features, and is easy to understand and tune.
Buy the rtf, and enjoy it, but unless you have flow a ccpm before, just buy the metal gear servos and prepare to install them soon. Other than that, this is a great price to get started flying rotorcraft.
