I have to say, I really believed that when I arrived at the field that the whole even would be rained out. At nine in the morning it was literally POURING outside. Pilots scrambled to find shelter from the rain, which lasted for thirty minutes or so, and then moved on for the rest of the day. Thank god for our RV.
The teams day started out with shooting some B Roll footage and photos until the One competition. In the meantime, Mikado captured the eyes of on lookers putting on some fantastic demos at center stage. While the top Mikado pilots put their Machines to the test, John Grecko and Mike Fortin were handing brand new VBars out like candy. It was entertaining to watch grown men push and shove at the chance of getting a new electronic component, to say the very least. Mikado also gave away a very special 20th anniversary Canopy at the end of their demo slot. Mikado pilot Jesse Kavros ran out far past the flight line and held on to the canopy. The first owner of a Logo 600 to reach him would win the canopy. Not surprisingly, a young man beat out all the older pilots to the beautiful new lid.
Once Mikado had cleared out of center stage, the first year IRCHA “One” competition commenced. Here is the premise, for those who haven’t seen the info on our site about it. You have 7 pilots, 6 invited and one elected, who brawl it out for the chance at $7000 dollars. Flights are limited to seven minutes, and you only get ONE! The winner is decided by the scores of judges and the cheers of the crowd.
There is no doubt that every pilot pulled out all the stops on his competition flight. Pilots who would normally hold back on demos absolutely ripped it up. At the end of the day, Bobby Watts was deemed victorious, for his heart pounding and entertaining flight. It is not often that I am extraordinarily entertained by a flight, but this was an incredible exemption. After receiving the seven thousand dollar prize, Bobby made a very special and heart warming announcement- he will donate all his winnings to the MS (multiple sclerosis) foundation that was being sponsored by IRCHA. At the end of the day, the International RC Helicopter Association raised over eleven thousand dollars for the cause. To learn more about MS, click here.
The rest of the day followed a similar course as Thursday and Friday- good flying weather and plenty helis in the air. After dinner by Outback Steakhouse was served, the massive raffle took place, and three lucky winners took home the grand prizes which can be seen in our Friday post. At the end of the day, the final pilot count was 960, a mere 6 more than last year. Not a decline, but certainly not a drastic leap. This speaks a lot about the still failing state of the world economy.
Once the sun passed the horizon, it was time to fire up the night machines. The now annual fireworks show at the IRCHA Jamboree has become legendary, and yes, we have video. Coming from California, where most fireworks shows are rather dinky, this was definitely a site to see. We were so close we were able to feel some of the explosions. Truly incredible. I think the pictures do more than my rambling. Have a look.
Though IRCHA creates an enormous work load for us, it’s our job to bring the content to the people who cannot experience this epic event for themselves. IRCHA truly is helicopter mecca. Make the trip, it really is worth it, something you will never forget.

During the pilots meeting Friday morning a few exciting announcements were made. Jeff Burnside from Empire Hobbies announced that they were a new distributor for Spartan RC. Jack gave away a free Spartan gyro to a lucky random pilot in the crowd. They also announced that Dominoes would be catering dinner at 6pm courtesy of Castle Creations.
The scale guys kicked off the day early with the NATS competition. The best scale modelers in the world came out to display and fly their incredible models. In picture, it is really difficult to distinguish between the models and an actual helicopter. These are, without a doubt, the most realistic models in the world, with fully functioning scale parts and detailed interiors. Pilots were charged with performing realistic flight routines that mimicked real helicopter flight, aiming for steadiness and realism over speed. The scale show was definitely a spectacle to see for anyone who appreciates real helicopters, and if you missed it today, the finals are being held tomorrow.
Around 10:00 am Thunder Tiger began their Thunder Tiger X50 build off which was similar to last years Titan SE build off. A raffle was drawn for three contestants to see who could build a Thunder Tiger Raptor X50 that fastest. The contestants wrenched on the new helicopters all day, and it was a close finish. In the end the winner took home his new Raptor X50.
By mid day, most of the team models had arrived. Avant, Outrage, BeastX, TSA, Smack Talk, ElyQ, and even RCHeliResource had girls on hand to assist in promoting their products. These models were definitely some of the nicest and outgoing of IRCHA yet.
At twelve, the center flight station was closed down for the noon time demos. All the top pilots from the major teams put on outstanding flights that blew away the crowd. Matt Botos blew away the crowd with a high speed, high adrenaline flight on his new Synergy E9. At some points he could have easily been pushing 130 mph. He finished off his flight with a very interesting auto straight out of a loop, something I’d never seen before.
Nick Maxwell was up next. Never one to disappoint, Nick thoroughly impressed the crowd, cutting the grass with the brand new Rave ENV flybarless electric running the Curtis Youngblood Total G. Nick wrapped it up with an incredible 1000 foot blade stop inverted auto, pulling it right up to the starting circle.
Daniel Jetschin from Avant, Kyle Dahl from Mikado, and many other pilots continued to put on show stopping flights throughout the afternoon. These pilots really brought their A game to this event, and it really showed.
It was also announced at around noon that the pilot count was already in the low 900′s. That was rather surprising though, because the field did not feel anywhere near as crowded as it did last year. The site was certainly packed, but it did not feel like there were as many people at the field.
The prize table for the Saturday raffle was also unveiled today, with a wide variety of smaller prizes and two really fantastic grand prizes, an Avant 90e running the new Rigidcore flybarless head and a Logo 600se, both outfitted with the top of the line electronics systems. A third grand prize was added, a fully set up Bergen gasser. There are going to be three very exited pilots Saturday evening.
Throughout the day, there were several “power hours”, where flight teams lined up for one hour to show their best flying. The two flights that really stood out were Bert and Bobby of team Heliwholesalers dual demo, with incredibly tight formation flying, and Daniel Jetschin of team Avant, who pushed the boundaries of one of the most capable 3d machines on the market. The power hours provided great entertainment for those wanting to witness some of the best flying the world has to offer.
The day ended with the fabulous S.W.A.R.M party, which is an entire story in itself. Beer, wine balls, and great food. We are working on a sick trailer for the party, expect that later. It looks like we have a lot in store for tomorrow.
