Heli Invasion 2010 – Justin Jee’s Aeolus 600 Torture Testing Continues – 2010-10-01

Justin Jee http://JustinJee.com continues to torture test the AHF Aeolus600 prototype to find weakness in the transmission. Due to prototype’s small diameter pulleys in primary transmission, the front belt would not last past few flights. We are experimenting with larger diameter pulleys that almost rubs it inside of the frame to handle the torque. However, this has caused the belt on the output side to expand and rub against the frame causing frictional losses. This was visible during the 2nd half of this flight. Creating clearance in the frame, so the belt does not rub against the frame while running (it did not do that at low speed) made a remarkable improvement in performance. More videos will come as the transmission and other areas get improved.

Justin Jee http://JustinJee.com participated in the Heli Invasion 2010 in Fredricksburg, VA. This was the 3rd annual and set the recored of 170 attended pilots. Noon demo include pilots like Alan Szabo Jr, Makus Kim, Nick Maxwell, and Colin Bell. This was definitely the best way to close the 2010 flying season. Justin started experimenting a bit of smackdown style of 3D with slight bump up on the swash gain and using standard 3d blades.

2010 Heli-Invasion: Not the Biggest, Only the Best!!!

Well here I sit, one week after the conclusion of the 2010 Heli-Invasion. Finally, my voice has just about come back, my sunburn has faded and I am finally caught up on sleep, but the memories, excitement and the joy of running an event the magnitude of the 2010 Heli-Invasion lives on!!

As an event organizer, I can honestly say that there is no more incredible feeling than looking out over a sea of 200 plus spectators, registered pilots, vendors and countless sponsors and thinking “How cool is this?!?” It’s just a shame it all goes by so quickly.

I have spoken to numerous people and everyone, the pros, the registered pilots, the spectators all felt the 2010 Invasion was just over the top. Never before at the Invasion have we had people flying until not midnight, not 1 am, but 2 am on BOTH FRIDAY & SATURDAY night. Between the friendships, the good times and camaraderie, the Heli-Invasion is truly one of the best events around.

First off, I need thank EVERYONE that attended the event, this year easily broke last years record for registered pilots, with a whopping 168 registered pilots.

And with an event this big, you can bet there is a great team behind the Heli-Invasion that makes it all possible. I personally want to thank, in no particular order, my wife Carrie, for putting up with me not only at the event, but in the weeks and months preceding the event; also Clay and Daniel, for their tireless work in both the prep and running of the event; Nate Jr & Drew they helped keep the madness to a minimum; Bill Jackson & Erin…. true friends that give everything they can; and finally, thanks to Eric B. without him, there would have been no lighted sign to show the way nor lights to fly by!!

I also need to thank Fredericksburg RC Club for the use of their field for the weekend, and most importantly, thanks to land owner Keith Campbell for letting it all happen.

With the 2010 Heli-Invasion Team pulling out all the stops for the last week before the event, you just can’t help but say . . . . holy smokes, I have to try and make it to this event. Well, where do we start?

There are more pilots registering each day, among the top pilots to confirm their attendance is Kyle Stacy. As a pilot with Team KDE Direct, you know Kyle will be throwin’ it down at this event.

Announcing the “Bust A Hover” Contest at 2010 Heli-Invasion. What is this contest exactly? It is a little F3C spice to this event. Here is the announcement.

Everyone can hover a heli, right? Well how well can YOU hover? That is the question. You can find out at the 2010 Heli-Invasion. This will be a fun contest for everyone, regardless of experience or ability, and you can enter any type of machine you wish (nitro, electric, flybarred, flybarless, 450 size, .50 size or .90 size, etc). Participants will be charged $2.00 to enter, with 50% of the proceeds going to the winner and 50% of the proceeds going to support the 2010 USA F3C team.

The contest will be judged by three (3) guest judges, who will have airhorns. Participants will be asked to fly through several hovering maneuvers chosen from the AMA’s Radio Control Helicopter Competition Regulations. Maneuvers will be:

1. Tail-In Vertical Rectangle (from Class I)
2. Spike with 90 & 180 Degree Pirouettes (from Class I)
3. Vertical Circle with 180 Degree Pirouettes (from Class II)
4. Inverted Vertical Triangle with 180 Degree Pirouettes (from Class II)
5. Vertical rectangle with 360 Degree Pirouettes (from Class III)
6. Vertical Hourglass with 180 Degree Pirouettes (from Class III)
7. Figure M with Half Pirouettes (from FAI)
8. Semi Circle with Pirouette (from FAI)

Participants will begin with maneuver 1 identified above, the pilot will be subjected to a high-level standard in the manuevers, and any deviation off the prescribed maneuver will result in a strike (or in this case the sounding of the air horn), once a pilots reaches three strikes, his flight is over. The pilot that makes it furthest through the maneuvers will be declared winner.

The great part about this contest, is that you can enter as many times as you wish (just pay the $2.00). Also, you can “draft” someone to fly in the contest as well, meaning you can pay their entry and they have to fly in the contest.

The contest will be held as both prelims and finals. Prelims will take place throughout the day on Friday and Saturday morning, with finals being held Saturday late afternoon. The winner will receive 50% of the prize pool, along with some other cool “surprise” prizes.

So, if you think you can hover, or you just want to have fun, make sure you bring your best heli and give the “Bust A Hover” contest a try.
