3DMasters Jeff Barringer issues Press Release in regards to so called “Media Fee”

We were informed that 3DMasters posted a statement in regards to the media fee that seems to now be called a SPONSORSHIP FEE was only imposed on RCHeliResource.Com. Here is the statement posted on 3DMasters website.

This statement was issued in response to an email exchange between RCHR and 3DMasters and an email send out to all advertisers and sponsors in the industry. As you can see its no rant. (sponsor names were redacted)

This was a simple request. Like we said we are not profiting from anything. 2 advertisers and sponsors of his event were paying our expenses to GOTO the event so that they could get their the most out of their marketing dollars from sponsoring the event. That’s plain and simple. They were paying our air fare and hotel in exchange for me coming and shooting the event and proving media coverage of their products as well as every other product and pilot at the event. Without sponsor funding…we cannot afford to travel the world and do these events on $100/$200 a month advertising fees.

We then issued this letter to our sponsors.

We received many emails in support of our position as well many public comments on my personal Facebook page and RCHR Facebook page.

We are not trying to bully anyone and its fine if they want to stand their ground. That is their right to do so but RCHR wont be covering, supporting or sponsoring 3DMasters if they are charged a fee for doing so.

PRESS RELEASE: RCHeliResource will not be covering 3DMasters 2011

We are sorry to announce that RCHeliResource will not be attending 3DMasters for coverage this year and possibly in the future as well. We know that the industry and sponsors depend on our coverage of this event to promote their pilots, products, and talent outside of the event attendees but 3DMasters as an organization has imposed media fees in excess of $800 USD that make it impossible for us and many other media outlets to cover this event. For some reason 3DMasters has some illusion that we (some of the media) are making money by being there or by selling goods at the 3DMasters event which is far from the truth. In fact, its the opposite…..the events we travel to are in some ways a marketing expense for us and are never profitable. Two sponsors who were paying for RCHR staff to attend were disappointed to know that we had to withdraw because of the cost of 1 person to attend with media fees topped out at about $4,300 USD and they were only providing us with about $3,000 USD to attend. It just does not make smart business sense for this event (or any event for that matter) to charge the media to attend the event. Other events that have charged similar fees (upwards of $1,000) and we have also declined to provide media coverage as well. 3DMasters is not the first and I am sure not the last. The industry is becoming increasingly more media savvy and I am sure policies like this will be changed due to sponsor dissatisfaction with lack luster exposure. If we were selling access to our website or DVD for that matter then I would think that a fee would be appropriate but in this case it is totally unjustified. Several companies support our decision. Facebook users in our industry express their outrage on our Facebook page. The 3DMasters Facebook page was deactivated shortly thereafter.

As well some sponsors have either withdrawn support of 3DMasters or have expressed intentions of not sponsoring the event next year after we sent an email out explaining this fee imposed quoting the email from 3DMasters officials. We plan on covering supporting the much larger and much better organized “Zone Competition” at the Weston Park Airshow in 2012 as we did in 2011. Whether or not sponsors follow will be a market decision those marketing professionals will have to make for themselves.

If anyone sends us 3DMasters news we will post it. We do not believe in censorship, clicks, his-side vs. my-side kiddie games. We just report the news.

UPDATE: Some people have reported on our Facebook page that they have received media passes now without paying a fee. We checked 3DMasters webpage for more information about us or the media fee and just noted a comment calling me “Louisiana” Derrick?

UPDATE: Entrants List and Event Judges Announced For 3D Masters 2011

We have now published the entrants list for 3D Masters 2011. Sincere commiserations to those who did not acheive a place, please try again next year.

For 2011 we have a really strong Entry List with 30 top pilots in the Masters Class and 25 in the Experts Class. Curtis Youngblood will be competing again, and he will be battling against 6 past winners. The average age of all competitors is 24 years, over 50% of entrants are 21 or less, and the youngest is MinChan Kim of Korea who weighs in at 7 years old! We have entrants from 25 countries, another record. This is going to be one outstanding competition!

New Location for 3D Masters 2011

3D Masters is proud to announce that the venue for 3D Masters 2011 will be TrafficPort at Venlo, the Netherlands in association with VOZ, Cycloon Holland and the Jupiter Flying Club. The site is located adjacent to the A67/E34, offering rapid and easy communications throughout Europe and sitting plumb on the Dutch border with Germany. Visitors by air will be able to make use of the local airports at nearby Dusseldorf and Cologne as well as the international facility at Schiphol, only 100 miles away. Accommodation too is available at all levels around Venlo, with campsites, bungalow parks, bed-and breakfast and hotels all readily available within the town and easy reach of the flying field.

VOZ specialises in Advanced Driver Training, especially for governmental agencies, privately owned companies and consumers. Their driver training is specially customized for high and low-speed vehicle-handling testing and training.

Cycloon Holland is a supplier of a broad range of light aircraft and all associated components, importing various and planes for the Benelux and German region. Technical Support, Repair and Maintenance of aircraft and avionics are also undertaken at the facility as well as providing schooling for pilot training.

Frank den Ouden of VOZ and Guido Holtackers of Cycloon are delighted: “While we are involved in providing superb professional services, we are also very conscious that the facilities here at Trafficport are very attractive to other organisations as a base for creating exciting events. We are therefore particularly pleased that an internationally famous event such as 3D Masters should choose Trafficport for the 2011 competition.”

The Jupiter Model Flying Club supported 3D Masters in the 2010 event, all members of the club working extremely hard before, during and after to ensure a fantastic experience for 3D Fans, Competitors and Sponsors. Chairman Walter Robijns commented “We have shaken down our systems very effectively as a result of the 2010 3D Masters, and we are now supremely confident that we can deliver an absolutely outstanding 3D Masters in 2011.”

A spokesperson for 3D Masters commented “We are really pleased to have secured the TrafficPort for 3D Masters 2011. The layout is perfect with North-facing pilot position and plenty of room for safe flying .The terrain gives us room to expand the event and the co-operation with the Jupiter Club, VOZ and Cycloon means that we are able to bring a lot of local knowledge, expertise and facilities to the event”

3D Masters 2011 will be held at TrafficPort, Venlo, the Netherlands on the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th July. In addition to the competition itself, the Synchro Competition, Demonstration, Evening and Night Flying will again help to create the fantastic atmosphere for which the event has become internationally renowned.
