Looks like Futaba has released their CIU-1 programming interface and software for their GY-520 gyro.  We finally get to go in and change some of the advanced settings on this already good performer.  We also have an instructional video to show you how it all works.

Well, its the video you have all been waiting for, our setup video of the Align FL-760 3G 3-Axis Gyro on a T-Rex 700. I know that I am not the best of doing these instructional videos, especially on camera, but I think I am getting better. We are interviewing for a new instructor so don’t worry…in the future it only gets better. This video basically goes over the full setup of the system. This video is very long…about 25 minutes but it goes into alot of detail and ends with a demo flight. The download is about 920 megs as well. Enjoy…this was 4 days in the making.

It comes that time with every motor when it starts to lose power or the bearing is going out and making noise. I recently had one of my YS 91 SR engines start making a bearing noise and was losing power, so I decided to rebuild it and document the process for future reference. Rebuilding an heli engine is not terribly difficult, but following a certain order of steps will make it much easier.

I and many others have had our struggles attempting to figure out the black art of how to properly breaking a nitro engine. Sure, you can always go for a short 4 gallon deal and have good power at first, but after just a few months of flying, power really seems to fall off. Recently, I discovered Ben Minors guide on how to properly break in and tune a nitro engine. Needless to say, it has drastically improved how my engines last and perform in the long run. I wanted to repost it here so as many people could learn from it as possible. Hope you all enjoy and successfully run your engines!

One of the greatest challenges of this hobby is learning how to fly. Sure, you can always just practice, but some maneuvers require some knowledge before attempting them. I have decided, since I am a somewhat proficient 3d pilot, we could do weekly instructional videos on 3d flight or whatever the audience wants. I would be doing this on the Phoenix simulator with the controller in the corner to show stick movements and audio commentary. However, I am still not sure how we’ll pick what maneuver to do, assuming that there is enough reason for me to do this. I would think that a poll would be a good way, or maybe you guys emailing me. If you have a suggestion on how to do this, PLEASE let me know! Also, take some time to vote in this poll so I know if I should take the time to do this.

Thunder Tiger has just released a completely new helicopter engine to replace the TT50. This is not as we often see a punched out modified power plant aimed at extending product life. The popular 50-sized helicopter exists due to low operating costs both for fuel and parts plus has the attraction of being very easy to transport. The power to weight ratio is slightly less than the 90 format in most cases, this however is about to change. Recently the strongest engines available were the OS hyper and pumped YS51-ST. Volumetric efficiency of these two very good engines is about as good as it gets, meaning any further attempt to increase this parameter would likely have an affect on throttling smoothness.

Some might have read the article I did two weeks back on the Raptor 50 Xtreme edition…Somehow, it got lost in the server upgrade process and so I did a repost of the article HERE.

In any case, I have continued on with the little project and finally have got everything sorted out. For those the busy ones who just want to know the results…Basically, this whole conversion is definately a worthwhile effort. It corrects the bad tendency of the stock raptor head, that is the pitching in FFF and slow roll rate. It gives a very nice feel in the cyclic, not too slow, nor too sensitive. With the new head, I can get that sort of “pop” effect that I thought was only possible on the 90 size. A lighter pair of paddles like the super stubz will make this head even better for 3D.

Compass model is relatively new to the helicopter scene. Their first projects started with the Knight Sport and the Knight Pro (discontinued). Their lineup has now expanded to the Knight 3d 50, Atom 500, and the Odin 90, which have proved to be great flying helis. I have owned the Knight 3d now for 4 months, and thought it would be a good idea to write a review.
